Culture of violence: Gun crime goes up by 89% in a decade

Gun crime has almost doubled since Labour came to power as a culture of extreme gang violence has taken hold.The latest Government figures show that the total number of firearm offences in England and Wales has increased from 5,209 in 1998/99 to 9,865 last year - a rise of 89 per cent.In some parts of the country, the number of offences has increased more than five-fold.
In eighteen police areas, gun crime at least doubled.
The statistic will fuel fears that the police are struggling to contain gang-related violence, in which the carrying of a firearm has become increasingly common place.
Last week, police in London revealed they had begun carrying out armed patrols on some streets.
The move means officers armed with sub-machine guns are engaged in routine policing for the first time.
Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Grayling, said last night: ‘In areas dominated by gang culture, we’re now seeing guns used to settle scores between rivals as well as turf wars between rival drug dealers.
‘We need to redouble our efforts to deal with the challenge.’
He added: ‘These figures are all the more alarming given that it is only a week since the Metropolitan Police said it was increasing regular armed patrols in some areas of the capital’.
But they provide the first regional breakdown of the increasing use of firearms.
Lancashire suffered the single largest rise in gun crime, with recorded offences increasing from 50 in 1998/99 to 349 in 2007/08, an increase of 598 per cent.

Only four police forces – Cleveland-Humberside, Cambridgeshire and Sussex – recorded falls in gun crime.
The number of people injured or killed by guns, excluding air weapons, has increased from 864 in 1998/99 to a provisional figure of 1,760 in 2008/09, an increase of 104 per cent .
The figures follow a warning by Mr Grayling that U.S.-style gang culture has reached some parts of the UK.
In August, he made a controversial speech warning that a collapse of ‘civilised life’ had allowed a brutal drug and gun crime culture – like that of the U.S. TV show The Wire – to flourish in Britain.
The hit TV series tracks the nightmare of gangs and organized crime in inner city West Baltimore and the futile efforts of police to deal with them.
The Met’s decision to employ armed officers on the streets has attracted criticism.
But the force, which has already begun the scheme, insists that the unprecedented tactic is a proportionate and temporary response to prevent armed gangs from controlling estates.

Last month, police warned that teenage girls were now being dragged into the gun culture by hiding weapons for their boyfriends.
Police are targeting girls between 15 and 19 with an advertising blitz warning them that they can expect a five-year prison sentence if they are caught.
The number of women charged with firearms offenses in London has increased six-fold in the past year - 12 have been charged since January.
Seven of them were teenagers, including a 16-year-old arrested after a 9mm Browning self-loading pistol was found in her bedroom.
As a veteran and as a true American, I just can’t believe why Americans have gotten so BLIND as to not see what is happening to our country. We have the federal government taking over one aspect of our lifes after another, and everyone just allows these things to happen. It seems Americans are too scared to oppose anything that Congress or the President want to do. We must not forget that they all work for us, The People, not the other way around. They are the ones who should be scared of what We, The People, can do to them. We can get them all out of office and replace them with people who will work for the people, not against them. As a matter of fact, why have we allowed for a person to be elected for, and assume the Presidency, of this great country, when that person has failed to prove his eligibility to even run for President? Have we become so naive and complacent that we just follow and accept what is shoved down our throats? Why hasn’t the majority of America spoken up and demanded that Obama’s birth certificate be made public???? Perhaps everyone is afraid of being hauled off to jail, for speaking up. But, don’t we have freedom of speech? So why should we be afraid to challenge Obama’s eligibility?Even more, why hasn’t Congress demanded the prove of his eligibility? Americans put all those people in office and Americans have the right to demand that they carry out their respective duties and follow the constitution, even if it means upsetting the President. Remember, in America, NOBODY is above the law… NOT EVEN the President. So why THE SECRECY ABOUT HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE?
As a resident of Illinois, one of the most gun hating states in the nation I want to ask Mayor Daly this. If your Chicago gun ban is so great why do you have one of the highest murder rates in the nation? Illinois is run by Chicago. So there you have it.
The only reason I can think of as to why crime is out of control is because the people who run the government are criminals themselves. The left is totally perverse, their thinking is 180 degrees backwards. They call evil good and good evil, and the Bible says woe unto those who do! They kick God and the Bible out of schools and replace it with the false religion of evolution. They brainwash kids into thinking that they evolve from animals, and then act shocked when they actually behave like animals. Back in the early days of our republic, kids read the Bible in schools, and they even carried guns. (Some schools had shooting clubs.) I know, because I have a number of classroom textbooks from the Seventeen and Eighteen Hundreds. Unlike the evolutionist slant of today, the textbooks back then were of a Biblical worldview. Kids were taught to love their neighbor, to show respect for adults, and to be kind to each other. Girls were taught to behave like ladies and boys were taught to be gentlemen. What do kids learn now? Boys nowadays behave like sexual perverts and girls behave like sluts. There is no love or respect at all. Kids who wish to wait to get married before having sex are often mocked and ridiculed. How backwards is that? On top of that, most kids nowadays have an entitlement mentality. They believe that the government’s job is to give them a free ride at the expense of others, mainly the “evil rich people.” They are taught socialism, communism, and political correctness instead of personal responsibility. They have no concept of our Founding Fathers or their philosophies on government. Ask them about men such as Patrick Henry, Noah Webster, Benjamin Rush or John Jay and they’ll give you a blank stare, but they can tell you all about the latest contestant on American Idol or the latest degenerate band on MTV! I know, because I work at a place where there are several kids like this around. It’s depressing listening to them. As long as this way of thinking continues to prevail in our society, there will continue to be more Colombines, more Fort Hoods, more workplace shootings, and more gang banger punks. Soft judges produce hardened criminals, but justice is the guardian of liberty. Where there is no justice, there is no liberty. I have a bumper sticker on my pickup truck that says “The Precious Metals of Freedom: Gold Silver and Lead.” I am ready to do battle with my guns in one hand and my Bible in the other. I have read many replies that call for “voting them all out in 2010”. I am quite sure that this WILL BE DONE. It HAS TO BE DONE!!! If WE the CITIZENS do not vote these “people in government” OUT, WE the CITIZENS WILL BE THE LOSERS. We will lose our freedom, our rights (which are being assaulted daily by the “people in government”), our Constitution (which is being violated every time one of the “people in government”, obama in particular, OPENS THEIR MOUTH!!! Our Way Of Life. OUR COUNTRY!!!!! I BELIEVE Every U.S. CITIZEN Should VOTE!!! I BELIEVE it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DO SO and if you choose NOT TO, then when the “people in government” do something to you that you don’t like, DON’T BITCH because you are “PART OF THE PROBLEM, NOT THE SOLUTION”!!!!!!! I DO have a FEAR though, and that is – we will not be able to get rid of them, the “people in government” all in 2010. There are those “people in government”, including obama, whose terms won’t be up until 2014. I FEAR that to have to WAIT until 2014 WILL BE TOO LATE for OUR COUNTRY!!! This DESTRUCTION OF OUR COUNTRY is not something that has been going on for a short time. I BELIEVE this DESTRUCTION started a few administrations back. At least back to Clinton and his “Ban On Assault Weapons”. But I also BELIEVE that under obama, WE ARE IN THE END TIMES!!!!!!! obama IS their ”chosen one”. With obama, they, the “people in government”, believe they the “people in government” will rewrite OUR CONSTITUTION and BILL OF RIGHTS for their, the “people in government”, and the U.N. desire/demand to FORCE OUR COUNTRY into a ONE WORLD ORDER government where we will HAVE NOTHING!!! I, for one, WILL NOT LET My WAY of LIFE, My CONSTITUTION, MY COUNTRY be DESTROYED by these “people in government” and obama. I WILL vote them ALL OUT when their terms are up and replace them with TRUE PATRIOTS who LOVE OUR COUNTRY, OUR CONSTITUTION and OUR FREEDOMS,RIGHTS and WAY OF LIFE!!!

I listen to the news , read the papers,read the bulletins on the websites and I have one question. When are we going to take our country back? I live in Kings county in the San Joaquin Valley. Farmland, rural people who didn’t vote obama into office. L.A. and the Bay Area did that our votes don’t count because they outnumber us.We have some of the strictest gun cotrol in the country. You can’t own a 50 cal. rifle for longrange target shooting because it promotes gun violence and you all know how many gang member are walking around carrying a 50 cal.BMG rifle for a driveby. My brother had a black guy threaten him with a gun because he bumped into my brother going into the neighborhood store. A retired Chp told us he doesn’t go into town anymore without his gun and advised us to do the same. In 1968 when the Watts riots were going on a group from L.A. and a group from Oakland came down here to burn the Beacon Refinery here in town and they were going to terrorise the local Farmers. They tried to recruit people from a black community gentleman asked them if they saw all the gunracks in these trucks and they said yes. He told them you’re not in the city anymore you fuck with these people they will kill you to protect whats theirs, the smartest thing you guys can do is go home before you get killed. After two weeks they left,not a shot was fired but they went away realizing it was not a smart move if they wanted to live.THE GUNS ALONE WERE THE DETERENT! I’ll never give mine up they help me protect my family and my property and nobody is going to take that right from me. I am not some kind of fanatic I am a honest, hardworking, voting American citizen who won’t let his rights, second amendment or any other be taken from me. The American Constitution is non-negotiable. I live by some very good advice I got from a retired sheriff when I asked him about carrying a gun under my seat in my truck. He simply told me along time ago a very wise man once told him “I’d rather be tried by 12 than carried out by 6 and that’s just the way it is and we better do whatever we have to do to keep it that way
We need to be very concerned when a Supreme Court Justice (Sotomeyer) doesn’t believe that the Second Amendment is “fundamental” law? What is it then? Throughout my education and life, the Constitution is the basis of all U.S. Law. Oh wait. The President thinks the Constitution is out-dated and needs to be re-written. He is a scary man and the wolf at the door. Will be nice when the Sheep wake up and realize their vote can determine who the next Supreme Court Justice can be and determine the future of America.
I believe the Japanese knew of our armed citizens in their decision not to attack the U.S. mainland right after the bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941. And they were correct..They had “awakened a sleeping giant.”
When are “We the people” going to wake up
and see what this congress and administration are up to and see that Christianity, their 2nd Admentment rights are up for grabs on a daily basis. Our freedoms are surely dwindling and if they pass this hannious healthcare bill it will be a huge freedomes lost! Seniors will not be treated as they are now..I could go on but this is not the time. WE have a govermant out of control and it must be stopped!!!Many are taking bribes for votes and are right out in the open with it. “I’ll vote your way if you give me so much medicade for my state.” Lousianna and Nebraska just did that and bragged about it!!! It is a discrace! If they will throw us under the bus over healthcare, what will they do to us about gun control. I shudder to think. My husband and I have already said “They can have our guns when they take them out of our cold dead hands” cause we’ll go down fighting! One fella here said Rember the Alamo and he was CORRECT! Folks,NOW is the time to get your firearms while you still can.BRING ‘EM ON BABY has is right (see post above). We need to have strength in NUMBERS. The TRASH in the white house CAN AND WILL come up with some kind of scheme/law/legislation to ban guns and/or ammo by the means of total confiscation, or taxing them into oblivion. IMO, the 2nd Amendment gurantees all the other rights…..As far as the Uk numbers go,lets just say Im glad I dont live there.Banning guns or regulating them to death is NOT the answer!!!!! Armed, law abiding citizens in their own community I feel will regulate crime to a point. You see,people on the left suffer from a mental disorder that should be medically investigated and treated,because its detrimental to society. Any sane person would not ban firearms!!!! The Japs were going to invade the U.S in 1941, but when they found out that half the people in the U.S were armed,decided against it.It just goes to show you that places like the U.K,Austrailia,Wales and any other firearm banning society has high crime rates.

Lets get real. A fire arm, long or short, concealed or not concealed is nothing more than a fancy sling shot. Which means you don’t have to get close to the person or persons that want to do you harm. Obvious we need to protect our selves. Why not a fancy sling shot ? A PROJECTILE will save you and your love ones. Iam a Combat Vet, I walk around lock and loaded for 13 Months with another 500 thousand military personal walking around lock and loaded. No one was Killed accidenally. Hum I wonder, How dangerous is a fancy sling shot really is ?
When will folks who think someone is trying to “grab” their guns get real and face some facts:
1) Guns don’t deter crime nor create it. If someone wants you dead, your gun is a false sense of security. They can kill you with it in your hand. It’s called “the element of surprise.” So unless you walk around with it in your hand, loaded and cocked 24/7, there are no guarantees – gun or no gun. This isn’t the wild west and no one on here can get a mortal gunshot wound and live like John Wayne. This ain’t TV and movies.
2) If you aren’t going around flashing it in the streets and acting like you’re on the streets of Dodge City, who cares?
3) Why are you people in such a tizzy about somebody else being a “gun-grabber”? I haven’t heard a word about anyone changing the Constitution with regard to “gun rights.” And unless you’re planning on doing something illegal with your own gun, why are you giving yourself a heart attack about it?
You’ll probably die of cancer or a heart attack or some other fatal disease of mankind LONG before anyone ever gets around to shooting you or breaking in your [I'm sure] heavily guarded home.
Look around you, o fearful ones. Nobody’s chasing you, and nobody wants your dang gun.
Nobody who isn’t breaking the law themselves would ever live their lives in this kind of fear. So what are you doing that you need to hold a gun so near you?

May we all pray that One Nation Under God is not forgotten by all of us in this down hill slide that we are experiencing at this time due to the Pelosi’s and her cohorts that feel they are above the law. In response to Renee Green’s comment: Based on the 2006 gun death figures, 30,000 people were killed that year by firearms (homicide, suicide, idiots). The risk is real and will probably become even more critical when terrorists
become active here. As to phantom ‘gun grabbers’, all you have to do is review the firearm restriction laws in the several states and the number of federal gun laws already on the books, much less the draconian ones waiting in the wings, to clearly see the intent of our “leaders” to insure their own safety by disarming the people. It must be understood that one of the first actions of any authoritarian state is to disarm the citizens, as it would be virtually impossible to impose your will on anyone who can stand on their own two feet with their rifle in the hand and say “No”! There is your threat.
As to your living 50 years without ever touching a gun, I’m happy for you; unfortunately, there are other sections of this wonderful land that are obviously not as gentle as you little corner of paradise.
The problem with this country is BOTH the Democrats and Republicans. Anyone who seriously thinks that one side isn’t corrupt or slaves to Corporate America hasn’t done an adequate job of paying attention. To the Republicans: The GW administration will go down in History as one of the worst administrations. They eroded your constitutional rights, expanded the power of the wealthy elite, invaded countries under false pretenses, destroyed diplomatic relations with the rest of the world, and spent money like it was going out of style. To the Democrats: Obama is a dud. He promised much and has turned out to be another corporate lackey. He made deals with big pharma to ensure you could not get your medication cheaper elsewhere, he flip flopped on military tribunals, he refuses to fix health care properly through nationalization or single payer, he populates his inner circle with more Wall Street insiders, he spends money on bailouts and useless stimulus packages.
