Culture of violence: Gun crime goes up by 89% in a decade

Gun crime has almost doubled since Labour came to power as a culture of extreme gang violence has taken hold.The latest Government figures show that the total number of firearm offences in England and Wales has increased from 5,209 in 1998/99 to 9,865 last year - a rise of 89 per cent.In some parts of the country, the number of offences has increased more than five-fold.
In eighteen police areas, gun crime at least doubled.
The statistic will fuel fears that the police are struggling to contain gang-related violence, in which the carrying of a firearm has become increasingly common place.
Last week, police in London revealed they had begun carrying out armed patrols on some streets.
The move means officers armed with sub-machine guns are engaged in routine policing for the first time.
Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Grayling, said last night: ‘In areas dominated by gang culture, we’re now seeing guns used to settle scores between rivals as well as turf wars between rival drug dealers.
‘We need to redouble our efforts to deal with the challenge.’
He added: ‘These figures are all the more alarming given that it is only a week since the Metropolitan Police said it was increasing regular armed patrols in some areas of the capital’.
But they provide the first regional breakdown of the increasing use of firearms.
Lancashire suffered the single largest rise in gun crime, with recorded offences increasing from 50 in 1998/99 to 349 in 2007/08, an increase of 598 per cent.

Only four police forces – Cleveland-Humberside, Cambridgeshire and Sussex – recorded falls in gun crime.
The number of people injured or killed by guns, excluding air weapons, has increased from 864 in 1998/99 to a provisional figure of 1,760 in 2008/09, an increase of 104 per cent .
The figures follow a warning by Mr Grayling that U.S.-style gang culture has reached some parts of the UK.
In August, he made a controversial speech warning that a collapse of ‘civilised life’ had allowed a brutal drug and gun crime culture – like that of the U.S. TV show The Wire – to flourish in Britain.
The hit TV series tracks the nightmare of gangs and organized crime in inner city West Baltimore and the futile efforts of police to deal with them.
The Met’s decision to employ armed officers on the streets has attracted criticism.
But the force, which has already begun the scheme, insists that the unprecedented tactic is a proportionate and temporary response to prevent armed gangs from controlling estates.

Last month, police warned that teenage girls were now being dragged into the gun culture by hiding weapons for their boyfriends.
Police are targeting girls between 15 and 19 with an advertising blitz warning them that they can expect a five-year prison sentence if they are caught.
The number of women charged with firearms offenses in London has increased six-fold in the past year - 12 have been charged since January.
Seven of them were teenagers, including a 16-year-old arrested after a 9mm Browning self-loading pistol was found in her bedroom.
Someday people will wake up and discover that criminals will always have weapons, no law enforcement agency will ever be able to stop this. Allowing the citizens to own firearms as protection will at least protect the innocent from the criminal since patrolmen (policemen) can’t be everywhere. Policemen show up after a crime is committed and the damage is already done, this does nothing to protect the innocent or deter a criminal. Say what you will, this is a fact.

In some circles, it’s going to be difficult to defend definitively that the reason for the increase in the gun crime is due soley to the gun ban. As already brought up in Britain, perhaps it is due to a collapse of ‘civilised life’. How shall we refute those who draw a different conclusion from the numbers presented here?
when will the idiots see that the most effective deterrent to crime of any kind is to allow citizens the right to keep and bear arms? only when would-be criminals see that the government allows law-abiding citizens the right to defend themselves and those they love and their property will crime go down
According to a study done by a CANADIAN university, ever since the ‘even stricter’ gun laws passed in Canada in about 1996 or ’98 [my confusion, not the university's, I just can't find the direct quote at the moment], violent crime has gone up 40%. According to that study, the same is true in Australia, who passed a simular law about then.
That seems to be pretty definative, two nations passing simularly restrictive gun laws, and having the violent crime rate climb by approximately the same amount, over the same time period!?
I don’t have a gun. But I do believe all Americans should have the right to own one.
If you folks are counting on the 2nd Amendment — DON’T”!!
Here’s why: “A well regulated militia,being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infinged.” That’s what the 2nd amendment says. I believe the anti-gun lobby is just waiting for a case to get to a liberal Supreme Court. THEN THEY WILL POUNCE!!
We do NOT have a Militia!. When the 2nd Amendment was written, we did not have a standing army. The only paid police forces were in the big cities of New York and Philidelphia. The rest of the country had to rely on themselves AND their own weopones to protect themselves.
The anti-gun lobby will use the 2nd Amendment to turn the tables on gun-owners rights.

It’s no longer about guns. It’s about the left having all the power and being able to do whatever it wants. Just look at the Health care bill, itdoes nothing for the people, excuse me, it bankrupts the country, but the left will still say look what we did for the country. One other point I’d like to make. If gun laws were so good at controlling crime how come all or most of the countries that have gun control. the people are now trying to get those laws removed from their books.
Your preaching to the choir here. I’ve been a Life Member of the NRA for over thirty years and we’ve fought anti-gunners many, many, times. We’ve presented the “facts” to them so many times it make me dizzy just thinking about it. We discovered that the anti-gunners are either too stupid or too hardheaded to give a damn about “facts”. You Brits just don’t want to believe that “consequences are always THE DETERRENT”. Use a gun against my or my loved ones–risk getting shot or killed yourself…..that seems rather ‘basic enough’—obvious for all except those who would benefit from having to deal with ONLY ‘helpless citizens’!
The present US Government is all about control. You don’t have to look far to see the pattern. Media control, Free enterprise small and large business control, Money control, now Health control, Free speech limitation(control), Religious freedom limitations,….the writing is on the wall, and gun control is either next or close to next on their agenda. Once they have that, they will have it all. The histrorical lessons of gun control are plenty. All the major dictators and tyrrants used it to subdue the populace and render them helpless.
The fact of the matter is that, while most of the privately held guns will never be used to defend yourself, you and the perp both know that you have a firearm and that will most likely dissuade the perp from try to rob or kill you.

Well, lets look at other countries that banned guns and see how well they did. Let’s see, Hitler banned them in Germany. How did that work out for a few million people that got rounded up and executed? Numerous countries in the middle east banned them before certain regimes took over. Did that work out to the good of anyone? Guns are banned in Cuba. How are the people doing over there? Russia did the same thing. How are their peopel doing? Are ANY of these countries where “free people” live? Are / were there mass murders in these countries mostly done by the very government / officials running those countries and who banned those guns?
The 2nd Amendment was put there for a reason. What is happening today IS tyrany. Why mass amounts of people don’t arm themselves, ban together and storm the freaking white house to take it all back is beyond me. The Supreme Court FINALLY ruled that the 2nd amendment means INDIVIDUAL rights to keep and BEAR arms. It doesn’t say in the 2nd Amendment that we get to keep and bear arms as long as they are unloaded or safely locked up and made completely useless, or we’ll be arested. It doesn’t say we can keep and bear arms as long as they don’t have more than 10 round magazines. It doesn’t say we can keep and bear arms as long as they aren’t a threat to the government or out of control officials acting on bogus orders. It CLEARLY states that it is there to STOP a government from taking over. As long as we sit here ALLOWING them to beat us down and ILLEGALLY regulate our guns into useless pieces of iron, we might as well roll over and play dead. If we ALL banned together and showed them that we will NOT tolerate this shit any longer, they’ll have no choice but to drop any and all regulations and bans ever instated. There are an estimated 44 or so million “reguistered” gun owners. this means there are probably two to three times more than that in reality. Why we only have 4 million NRA members is beyond me! It just shows how many people really care or are really concerned about this stuff. if you really want to make a difference, get all of the gun organizations together, including NAGR and join forces to get BIG numbers of people together for the same cause. The ONLY way we’re going to be able to send a solid and undisputable message to Washington and change the laws is by having power in numbers by gun owners getting together and ENDING thenm this message.

i am a gun afficianado, a middle-aged female former NYC social worker , now a small farmer. It is my belief that when ordinary people who are not part of a violent culture have guns for self-defense, the crime rate decreases.It is very clear that this has happened for many years and stats and studies showing this have been frequently sidelined as anti-gun forces claim the tools used for self detfense and not the culture of violence itself, are causative.
We CAN stop violence from eradicating civilized society. It takes a will, and a cadre of untouchables, a modern day corps of Elliot Ness types dedicated to restoring a crime free community. It takes government to realize and proactively address the facts that when you do not pay a living wage, and yet you glorify materialism over values of human life and productivity, achievements, development of talents and skillsbuilding in arts, science and humanities,and the capacity to raise a family with hope for employment and education that is useful and leads to autonomy, that gang cultures which satisy the human need to belong to a meaningful community and be a productive member step into that vaccuum, just as drugsrunning, racketeering, gambling, money laundering and the sex trades will make material “success” possible for pimps and dealers in the dearth of legitimate economy.
It is not enough to claim that opportunity exists. It is absolutely essential that plutocracy and oligarchy be defeated and democracy and the inclusivity of a culture that ahs a respected place for ALL the classes, not a new form of fiefdom, be rejclaimed.
When people have responsibility, work and play that links them across class lines and also gives meaning and identity with dignity and the capacity to be happy in ways that are not exploitive of otehrs, they almost always choose to do so. When instead we market the excessive indulgence of appetites and hedonistic nihilism in place of sublimation of immature desires and greed in place of altruism and social darwinism exploiting vulnerable others for personal gain in place of helping those less fortunate, we are ensuring that all the violence attendent to such addictions and their black market economy roots will transmigrate through every class in society and pollute them all.

Why can’t they understand that when guns are outlawed, only the outlaws have guns? I like many other law abiding gun owners will tell the federal government it can have my guns when hell freezes over. The Far Left wants to establish a Socialist/Marxist state in this country. Many of them don’t try to hide that sentiment. In my humble opinion the 2nd Amendment helps in protecting our rights in the other nine amendments. I am sure many will say the gun crime statistics revolve around injuries to ‘the gangs’ & not ordinary citizens. And perhaps they have a small point there. If we knew how many “unarmed average citizens” became victims of armed criminals (whether gang or lone attackers, I refer to all of them as criminals), versus how many victims there were prior to the enactment of such restrictive laws, we may have an even better idea on the effectiveness of gun control or confiscation laws.
Personally, I suspect there to be an increase in unarmed robberies or attacks of any kind, since all know criminals will pick the path of least resistance & an unarmed victim must be defined as the ultimate in the path of least resistance.
The next point is one of serious issue for America. Just how many Americans will learn of this investigative study &/or the intimate details of the study or any of the British news reports? I think the answer to that is patently obvious. Few Americans will ever learn that gun control laws in Britain, Australia, or Canada, have had a negative affect on crimes committed with guns. There is a culture within the media, corrupted by liberal ideological fanaticism, which refuses to allow ‘the unwashed masses (thats you & me folks), to know all of the details of such investigations or news reports. If the public were to become aware of the ineffectiveness of such oppressive laws, they might demand their repeal. And if there is one thing a liberal finds sacrosanct, its that once a law or government bureaucracy has been created, it can never, ever, ever, ever, ever, be repealed or ended. The Ten Commandments &/or the US Constitution must live, breath &/or be subject to revisions that match liberal thoughts. BUT. Laws liberals love cannot ever be repealed. To do so would mean the end of life on this planet!
The upcoming national election will be the last chance for moderation in the U.S.. Elected liberal officals cannot continue to ignore the will of the people instead of their own self interests. All current elected politicans in Washington DC most go or the Muslims will take over.

The 2nd amendment was never about target shooting or hunting rights!! It’s about the people having the means to stop (by force) a “government gone wild”. It’s happening right now before our eyes. This smiling articulate asshole in the White House is a Marxist tyrant. And he has surrounded himself by a bunch of goons like Eric Holder, David Axelrod, and Rahm Emmanuel. In the Senate we have the likes of Chuck Schumer, Frank lautenberg, Harry Reid, and so many others who seek to subvert the Constitution…..especially the 2nd amendment!
Let’s hope enough Americans wake up and take the Country back beginning in 2010……and let’s hope that our situation never deteriorates into civil strife and violence. That will be an ugly scenario!
But at some point, if the erosion of our freedoms continues, we are going to come to a “moment of truth” where either we rise up and fight to preserve our constitution as it was written, or roll over and let the flame of freedom go out.
I for one will be ready to fight at that point…..and one way or another, gun bans or no gun bans, I will have weapons to fight with. I am an American! Nations disarm their populations for a very simple reason: In order for a socialized dictatorship to work, the government must have a monopoly of force. Without that monopoly of force the state can not possibly force its will upon the people. And why is that? Because no free thinking people will tolerate that form of government if they are armed. This was proven quite well by the actions of our forefathers during the American Revolution. We who believe in the right to keep and bear arms, a God-given right that is simply enumerated in the Second Amendment, should regard those who wish to strip us of our rights not as political foes but as our mortal enemies. Yes, this sounds harsh, but it is the only logical way to look at it. These people can not be negotiated with nor can they be reasoned with. They are the enemies of your rights which means, as we Americans have always interpreted our rights, that they are the enemies of the will of God. We must zealously guard our rights as once they are stripped down or taken, getting them back will be a very bloody and difficult task indeed.
We are all out here that will defend just watch what you say to whom, there sure enough are a bunch of folks that never will get it or unnderstand whats going on until they read it in the HISTORY BOOKS. We understand what is going on with the Democrats right now and they themselves see their window of opportunity closing quickly before their eyes. Yes it will take three elections to rid ourselves of the ever increasing number of lying politicians that are only in the position they are to enrich themselves and at any cost get what they wish for themselves we on the other hand get screwed. I personally have observed more people arming themselves since January 2009 than any other time I can remember and I don’t think it’s because more folks are taking up hunting. Learn to listen to the candidates and see through the rhetoric of their speeches then turn off the news with the exception of FOX NEWS and go forth and vote being well informed.

We are a minority in voting, not in numbers and we can deal with this issue politically. We need to elect better candidates or find better candidates to run for office. The second amendment is surely under siege yet again in front of a condoning media and apathetic population and by politicos that would rather pass illegal legislation to support their agenda and fight for it in court than defend the Bill of Rights.
The thing that really struck me in the article was the psychological war for gun control and ultimately government control in the use of the term “temporary response”. Really? Well how long will this go on then? What if things get worse, then what will be “proportional and temporary”? I respect the police and think criminals have too many contrived “rights” as manipulated through the courts. But I sure as hell dont want police or military personnel patrolling my streets while openly carrying machine guns as a matter of coarse. Sounds like a police state to me.
Keep up the discourse, get educated on the issues and spread the word on the real issues of gun control in this country and help generate more Pro Bill of Rights supporters!!

There are EVIL people in the world who mean us harm. You have a God given right to be able to protect yourself and your family.When Missouri was trying to get concealed carry passed there was opposition to it and I gave the NRA the following four questions to use in the debate:Do you believe you have the right to protect yourself and your family? Yes! You have a God given right to protect yourself and your family.
Do you believe criminals care about laws? No. Criminals, by definition, do not care about laws. Criminals will carry and use weapons against their victims.
Do you believe Law-abiding citizens will become criminals by shooting up the town if states enact right to carry laws? No. Law abiding citizens, by definition, abide by laws, even unjust gun control laws, wherein they are restricted from protecting themselves against criminals.
Are there current laws on the books to deal with people who misuse firearms, i.e.: flourishing, assault with a deadly weapon etc? Yes. If people use weapons illegally there are laws on the books to address the violations.
Individuals have choices in their lives. If they do not want to own or carry guns then they do not have to. However those individuals should not impose their will on other people by telling them that they cannot carry weapons to defend themselves.

I lived in California at the beginning of World War 2, and I remember December 8, 1941 as the day my father went out and bought a case of 45/70 ammunition for his WWI Krag rifle. Everyone in our neighborhood had weapons, and the Japanese knew this. That is why they never attacked the West Coast. An armed society is a safe society, particularly if the citizens are willing to use the weapons to keep the freedoms they enjoy. I am willing to live or die for that freedom!
We will be watching, waiting for the 2010 outcome. In the mean time all gun groups and hunting groups, i. e. NRA, CPRA, Quals Unlimited etc. need to meet and attack all of our corrupted officials and demand the government leave our guns alone and get dumb ass out of the white house. He is about as corrupt as you can get. Look where he comes from, Chicago Ill. The most corrupt state in the union with I think the last 3 governors are in prison. Wake up people, we need to act now.

Hey Mike .. glad to hear you’re for treason .. you know, overthrowing the guv-mint ,,, brings to mind an incident when I was in the service many years ago .. we were discussing a situation that might involve a hoard of individuals seeking to enter our facility during a “civil disturbance” .. one of the younger members asked what we would do if there was an “overwhelming number” of attackers .. I answered with: “That’s why they make machine guns!” ..

It’s safe to say that more Americans know that where there are armed law abiding citizens, there are fewer violent crimes and fewer gun accidents. Nobody can rationally argue with the National Institute of Justice studies that support that claim. The problem is the people who say, “Yeah, but you can’t have a lot of people running around with guns. Somebody will get killed,” or my favorite, no amount of guns in the hands of law abiding citizens would have been able to stop the Virginia Tech shooter or other mass murderers from killing.” My answer is that most of those shooters, many of whom planned their evil deed over a period of several days or weeks, would have changed their plans or looked for a softer target. Those people might have been sick, but they weren’t stupid. They specifically picked so-called “gun free” zones to kill the most number of frightened, terrified, helpless and unarmed people in as much time as possible. Now that almost every state in America has some sort of concealed carry laws in place, we need to backtrack and clean up these dangerous gun-free zones like college campuses, shopping malls, elder and child care centers, offices, and work places. Those are the places that rapists, armed robbers, assailants and deranged killers will target.

I am not part of the NRA, Do not have a concealed carry, Don’t even have a gun! I will Be, Have, AND OWN!. I just would like to know if anyone even realizes how many American officers who carry a gun don’t even like them. They do well enough at target practice to pass and become an officer yet they don’t even own their own gun? No wonder all these deaths happen! If the officers were more like the NRA and legal gun owners, then they wouldn’t be so afraid to confront or even encounter a gang or two!
I was jumped by 6 male “gang members” that just so happened to be my neighbors that lived in the only other apartment in my building. The cops didn’t do shit, didn’t patrol and almost arrested me for defending my self with a beverage can! WTF! So as I was moving out of this building I chose to call an officer out to hang out while I got my things out of the apartment; In a round about way they told me they couldn’t stay long because the other street’s “gang” had shot one of my street’s “gang” members just the other night (while I was at the hospital). after I had completely moved out I most secretly hoped that they might get a few more guns and kill each other off.. Bad thinking I now! But if the cops are afraid to watch a 23 year old girl with a half fractured face, loose teeth, and two black eyes move out because they, themselves do not even care to fire their weapon (weather it be to defend themselves or another person’s life)
I know for a fact that if I had gone ahead and gotten my cc and the 24/7 I was looking at just maybe a month prior to that it would not have gone down that way! Ever since I have lived with my mom, now saving money to move to a better place and get all the licensing I need to carry a gun and a few guns! It’s pretty pathetic that the only way felt safe moving out of my house was with my boyfriend(brand new at the time!) and his 1911! Not the cops!
Since then my face has healed, I look better than ever, and my lovely boyfriend take me shooting at the range as often as we can get out. I had always been a good shot when I went hunting, but now I am a damn good shot with a hand gun. I even out shoot most of his friends (that poor poor man with the gun target!) Not to mention, we go out to the range with his dad and brother! Guns brought them together as a tighter family.
Just to let you all know I’m not knocking officers in general, just the ones that don’t like guns.. They need to learn to respect the gun, that way they won’t accidentally shoot their partner, or the wrong person but they might just finally shoot the people that are running around shooting people and not be so afraid to pull them out and use them! I have always been a true believer in you don’t pull a gun out if you don’t intend to use it, yet every day they pull them out with shakey hands, bet the safety is still on and never gets switched off… Do they even know how to clean a gun?

of guns and gun ownership. We are headed toward a society
in which few people grow up hunting. A society where few are ever around guns and therefore have a fear built by gun haters and their propaganda. Shows on TV about guns and their use or programs sponcered by gun manufacturers. We need to educate the people of America to what has made this country a great nation. How the gun has played such an important part in our growth and well being. It all comes down to the fact that we as a nation are cut off from any education that would help to relieve the fear of firearms.
If the general public were informed fear could not find fertile ground to flourish. I share all of you guys passion
and I deplore liberals as much as anyone, but one thing I would caution is the use of profanity. Liberals like to paint us as uneducated hicks who can read or write. Those who must settle a disagreement with a weapon because we can’t express ourselves otherwise. Profanity only makes them feel they are vindicated in that view. I can and do use language like that, but I don’t want to arm them either.
So when it is to my advantage to show the better side of my nature I do it. I can always go out later and have a smoke and cuss with the rest of you. You may not like it but think about what I have said, it could be that we would help ourselves just as much by showing our manners when necessary.

Good to see smart Americans realizing just how important our Second Amendment Rights are. It is this Constitutional right, which is also hugely responsible for the U.S. having never been invaded (save the War of 1812),successfully, by a foreign enemy. It is probably the biggest reason why we haven’t been invavded. But don’t worry…..we will never let the Feds or the states unarm the citizenship of this great country.
