Culture of violence: Gun crime goes up by 89% in a decade

Gun crime has almost doubled since Labour came to power as a culture of extreme gang violence has taken hold.The latest Government figures show that the total number of firearm offences in England and Wales has increased from 5,209 in 1998/99 to 9,865 last year - a rise of 89 per cent.In some parts of the country, the number of offences has increased more than five-fold.
In eighteen police areas, gun crime at least doubled.
The statistic will fuel fears that the police are struggling to contain gang-related violence, in which the carrying of a firearm has become increasingly common place.
Last week, police in London revealed they had begun carrying out armed patrols on some streets.
The move means officers armed with sub-machine guns are engaged in routine policing for the first time.
Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Grayling, said last night: ‘In areas dominated by gang culture, we’re now seeing guns used to settle scores between rivals as well as turf wars between rival drug dealers.
‘We need to redouble our efforts to deal with the challenge.’
He added: ‘These figures are all the more alarming given that it is only a week since the Metropolitan Police said it was increasing regular armed patrols in some areas of the capital’.
But they provide the first regional breakdown of the increasing use of firearms.
Lancashire suffered the single largest rise in gun crime, with recorded offences increasing from 50 in 1998/99 to 349 in 2007/08, an increase of 598 per cent.

Only four police forces – Cleveland-Humberside, Cambridgeshire and Sussex – recorded falls in gun crime.
The number of people injured or killed by guns, excluding air weapons, has increased from 864 in 1998/99 to a provisional figure of 1,760 in 2008/09, an increase of 104 per cent .
The figures follow a warning by Mr Grayling that U.S.-style gang culture has reached some parts of the UK.
In August, he made a controversial speech warning that a collapse of ‘civilised life’ had allowed a brutal drug and gun crime culture – like that of the U.S. TV show The Wire – to flourish in Britain.
The hit TV series tracks the nightmare of gangs and organized crime in inner city West Baltimore and the futile efforts of police to deal with them.
The Met’s decision to employ armed officers on the streets has attracted criticism.
But the force, which has already begun the scheme, insists that the unprecedented tactic is a proportionate and temporary response to prevent armed gangs from controlling estates.

Last month, police warned that teenage girls were now being dragged into the gun culture by hiding weapons for their boyfriends.
Police are targeting girls between 15 and 19 with an advertising blitz warning them that they can expect a five-year prison sentence if they are caught.
The number of women charged with firearms offenses in London has increased six-fold in the past year - 12 have been charged since January.
Seven of them were teenagers, including a 16-year-old arrested after a 9mm Browning self-loading pistol was found in her bedroom.
Now the “Experts” in the U.S. are wondering why crime rates here are dropping. I wonder whether it has anything to do with the majority of States passing concealed carry laws in the last several years. Fear of being shot by a law-abiding gun-toting citizen makes criminals think twice before trying to rob or car-jack someone.
Part of a sentence written in an email from this organization advocating our right bear arms says, in part, “and it is time gun owners have the evidence they need to argue against the unfounded claims of gun-grabbers… The only thing that we need armed with, other than our guns is that pesty declaration of independence. Something the “gun-grabbers” continue to ignore and pass laws is this pesty little document. These gods of congress will not be giving up their guns. They’ll just apply for and receive, in spite of the fact that they are crazier by the day, is a legal right to carry a concealed weapon. I beleive if they have to take a psychological test as they propose that the rest of us do they should be denied not only access to that license, but their legal right to have one as well because they’re obviously nuts. Just us, legal American citizens, that don’t have the common sense to know what’s best for ourselves, much less our country, MUST do is keep both of our eyes not only on the “gun-grabbers, but their obvious lack of respect for our constitutional right to bear arms, but our constitutional rights period. These gods are narcissists, they actually do seem to beleive that leagal, non-criminal American citizens are mentally deficient. We also must boot their arrogant butts right out of their supposed careers and put them on our side of the avenue; looking for a job. We also, I beleive, must give a congress member a limitation of time that they can serve theirselves under the guise of serving America. As I’ve often heard of late, I’ll keep my gun, they can keep their change.

Obviously, in the States we have gangs in growing numbers which extends inside our prisons and is an ever increasing threat to all of us. You never know when it will be your time to be attacked just carrying on everyday life. A good story is the one in Texas where a daughter saw both parents murdered in a restuarant. She ran for office and got a bill passed “called the carry law” which allowed permits to carry guns. This is an example of someone with common sense and the ability to reason. Crime is down since the carry law took effect. The daughter happen to have a handgun in the car when her parents were killed, but law at the time forbid her to carry. Many were wounded or killed in that restaurant that day. This law and the crime decrease shows when citizens keep their rights such as this carry law, crime goes down.
Note in the State of Texas: A carry law was passed when the daughter of two gun victims ran for office and pushed through a gun carry law for non-felons. The crime rate went down. What if this lady had been the typical Liberal? She would have blamed the inanimate object, the gun. Instead she did not, why was this? She had a gun in the car but did not bring it into the restaurant as to carry was not legal. The gunman did not obey the law and killed both of her parents as well as others. She realized that if she would of had a right to carry, many may have been saved. Since the passing of this carry law the crime rate has gone down. People were given their rights back!
Funny you should post this…I saw on the news today, that this is the first recession/economic downturn, in which violent crime has NOT gone up…they tried to say it was the stimulus money or extending unemployment…but I knew the truth…all those guns and ammo that people bought because of the economic issues and the Democrats being in office…criminals are probably pissed that it’s even more of a guessing game about who is armed and who isn’t…if the liberals REALLY believed in gun control, they would all put signs in front of their houses advertising they were gun free…the truth that we all know is, they can afford body guards and high-tech security homes, and will buy whatever guns they wish, laws or not, because they always have political friends to find loopholes for them…keep up the good work, the price of liberty IS eternal vigilance. Obama is trying to get our country headed in the direction exactly in the same way that Hitler did before WW2. But Obama will never get everyones guns. Even as dumb as some of our law enforcement is they know that it would be sucicide to try to take the peoples guns. There are some federal agencies that might try it but would back off after the most of them got shot. Our military would never go along with taking the peoples guns as this is one of their beliefs that the people have gun rights. I think in time the USA might try to take our guns, but it will be several years and after they think the new generations of people have been dumbed enought to go along with it.
Without the 2nd Amendment the rest of the constitutional amendments in an of themselves are worthless! I for one see a civil war starting to boil, and I will be more than willing to join in taking our country; and our rights back. We have over 5,000 laws on the books passed by ignorant people that aren’t even enforced. More laws against armed citizens are useless. A criminal doesn’t give a hoot about laws. American’s are starting to wake up! That is a given, and our leaders had better wake up and realize that fact! Our forefathers had many discussions prior to putting the second amendment in the constitution, and it would not have passed without it. It guarantees us a way to overthrow a currupt government, which is what we currently have! It is time to set our own “Term Limits” Vote the liberals and anyone opposing our 2nd Amendment out of office. They work for us, not for themselves! 8 years is enough! Living in a rural state(Vermont)where police protection is rather thin,who do you think would be most able to protect me and my loved ones from an immediate threat,the police officer who is 20 miles away or me? In US cities with restrictive laws on firearms possession, criminals are reasonably certain that they will not encounter an armed homeowner during a break-in to steal or commit more serious crimes. Criminals like the rest of us are not stupid; they balance their likely personal gain vs. the risk they must incur to achieve it. Only an ideologue can not see the logic in this reality. The crime data for jurisdictions with the most restrictive firearms laws strongly support this “inconvenient truth”.
I believe that ultimately truth will prevails over ideology. Thank God for the foresight and wisdom of the Founders of the United States of America. They judged the right of its citizens to keep and to bear arms as second only to to their right of free speech.
As a former British cop (for 21yrs) and now a Permanent US resident I feel I have a good perspective on this.Britain used to be a free country with gun laws that were restrictive but acceptable.Therein lies the danger.When i was a cop in the 70s and 80s the law required applicants for a firearms licence to obtain it from the police in his or her area.The police carried out a background check and stipulated the gun should be kept in secure storage.There was a restriction on the amount of ammo that could be held and amendments (Variations) were needed to change or add to the weapons held.This may seem draconian but US standards but it allowed for honest law abiding citizens to keep and use most types of firearm. The gun laws were gradually tightened first shotguns were subject to increased restriction ,then semi auto weapons banned.The handgun ban introduced after the tragic school shooting at Dunblane was a typical political knee jerk reaction to a tragedy.The shooter would not have been able to carry out this crime with his weapons had the local police in scotland carried out the checks they were required to.The only tangible result to the ban was of course the total destruction of our Olympic shooting team ,and of course the huge surge in gun crime.The unrestricted flow of guns from Europe into the country,as a result of the EU open border policy also added to the problem .

years imprisonment to anyone in possession of a firearm.This law led to the arrest and conviction of a former soldier who found a weapon throw over his garden fence and unwisely handed it in to the police.
Great Britain under its present liberal regime is a clear example of what is in store for the USA if the liberals get their way.The arguments they give for gun control are exactly those given in Britain were citizens are arrested if they use any kind of force to defend themselves. Read the book “DEATH by GUN CONTROL” by Aaron Zelman/Richard Stevens and let them tell you about Communist Russia, and Communist China and Cuba and Nazi Germany! The gun control that always perceeds a govt takeover (that is fixing to happen here if something isn’t done VERY soon) and then look at the (literally) millions of people who lost their lives to Gun Control! Any newcomer seeking election will not have had their integrity compromised by special interest groups or bribes. If an incumbent gives lip service saying that “I TRIED to stop it,” when held accountable for his vote, then that proves he was ineffective as your representative and deserves to be removed from office. We need fresh people in our government who represents us, the people who put them in office. There are no dynasties in America, and no little fifedoms either. We should not allow people to remain in office so long that they compromise “principal” to gain “profit.” nor should they “bargain” or “settle” for the “lesser of two evils” simply because of monetary gain or special considerations for their state. iE: When looking at millions of dollars for their state, and special Tax Credits, I guess it doesn’t matter if they abort a few babies or not, or vote for gun control, or redefinition of marriage. The way now is to circumvent the constitution and sign a UN treaty that bans guns. Now they want to make the constitution a useless document. Our Sec. of State is pushing to ratify this treaty so be aware!! She worked for a communist law firm right out of law schoo;.

On 60 minutes, one of the people did a piece on Englands growing problem with thieves armed with guns robbing country folks, farmers etc, one farmer is now in prison for killing one of the 2 thieves who came to rob him,The first time they came ro rob him they held him at gun point, robbed & beat him.The second time he was robbed ,same 2 because he was easy,pistol whipped him, no way to protect himself or so they thought,ultimately they came back the 3 time.He was ready. He took the dusty old ,rusty 12 gauge from the attic, cleaned it up, found some old shells he hoped would go off when he pulled the triggerThe did come back,they came thru the door without warning, he alsays had the gun handy ,he pulled up on them and told them to drop their weapons they shot,he shot first, killing one on the kitchen floor,the other was wounded, the one that lived sued, and theLAW ABIDING FARMER,is sitting in prison!!!! But hey,thats the goal og the liberals,by the way the only reason he still had the shotgun is because it was 50 yrs old,shells were 10 yrs old.NOW THE LAW BIDING FARMER IS SITTING IN PRISON!

Thank u for enlightening me on the subject of Guns. I’ve always been a Liberal and anti-guns because of the way I was raised, by liberal parents, who drove around West LA/Bev.Hills with GUN CONTROL bumper stickers on our family cars, during the 60′s & 70′s. I now have a completely different point of view on the subject. I want to go out & buy my first gun & learn how to use it correctly. The gun owners are right. With all the illegal aliens (many of whom are criminals) flooding CA., it has become very scary for people like me sometimes just to walk the streets alone. I have a right to at least be able to feel safe in my own house. I voted for Obama but not next time. Yes, it is our right as Americans to own guns. And, I intend to. Thanks again for the education!

You don’t even have to have firearms yourself to have them act as a deterrent. Just the thought that someone might be armed may prevent someone bent on mischief from messing with a potential victim. I can’t believe that removing this thought from a villain’s mind would have anything but a detrimental effect on the safety of the innocent. This is what I see as the biggest tragedy of outlawing firearms.
Like it or not,the world is not a nice place. Would we have had such an extreme tragedy at Fort Hood if that draft dodger Clinton hadn’t made it unlawful for soldiers to carry their firearms on a military base. Nidal Hasan knew he had defenseless targets.

From what I have read on the INTERNET from British newspapers, not only have Britain’s lost their guns, but they have lost their right of self defense. I’ve read articles about someone defending themselves, finding they are the ones now being prosecuted in court.
I remember England once being a bastion of civility to the extend Bobbies were unarmed, and there was an unwritten rule that a criminal doesn’t kill a Bobbie.
Now they are talking about a knife that makes it harder to stab someone.

Yes my friends, the libs have us right where they want us, scared to death of everything: the environment, health care, energy, the two wars we are now fighting, and all the other scare tactics they are using to convince the masses that they know best. One year, in just one year they have brought this once great country to it’s knees. We still have time: first, we must replace just about every member of Congress in the next years elections, then we must get rid of obama, and not just put anybody in there place, we must demand that the (NEW) government sign a pledge, a pledge that they will uphold our Constitution and return the true power of this country back to the people. We only have one chance, if we fail, if we do not do what needs to be done, well then, gentlemen, prepare to defend yourselves. A man once said that in order to keep a Democracy true to it’s cause it’s people must be prepared to shed it’s blood every so often, there has never been a more profound statement ever made, and this may very well be the time to put it to the test. I’m reminded of the phrase “Remember The Spartans”, when 300 stood against an entire muslim nation, do we have 300 or more left in this country to stand up against tyranny? It surprises me the anger expressed in the blog. Where have they been when elections occurr? Point that I have not read in any commentary: Two cities one in Florida and one in Illinois by law required every household to own a hand weapon. In both these cities/towns the crime rate went down to zero because that ordinance was published for the benefit of criminals to stay out! Yes, they did see the danger not from one household but from all households!!!!!!!
One of writers in this post stated to the affect that by banning all organizations together and marching on our leaders might get results. True, might get everyone arrested, except if we were to put together a “million person march” for our Constitutionally given rights, it might make a few libs wake up. These past “Townhall” meetings brought to the doorstop of some of our leaders the message that we are “mad as hell, ain’t going to take it anymore!” Now, if they went back to DC and voted against their constituents voices, then they should be removed, regardless of who the opposition is. Why hasn’t it happened yet? Voters are basically apathetic when it comes to voting change. Some voted Barry in thinking things will change. They changed, and for what? We are at risk of being taken over by Marxists or in other words, wolves in sheeps clothing. But to stay in office, all they have to do is promise the voters they will get what they want without having to work or sacrifice for it, and thus they then own the voters, lock, stock and barrel. We need continual pressure and action state by state, and district by district. For me, no incumbent will get my vote.

The streets will only be safe if everyone thinks that everyone else is carrying a concealed weapon! This will make thugs and wannabe gangsters think twice about using guns to commit crimes. This is because any legitimate gun carrying citizens can and will use them to protect themselves and their loved ones. The biggest thing is to make sure all criminals know that we practice real gun control all the time and will hit our targets every time. I have seen reports of gangland shootouts where 20 – 30 shots have been fired and 1 or 2 may have a minor injury. This will end soon enough if they think they can and will end up dead for pulling a gun on the wrong person. Criminals use fear to intimidate honest people into letting them get away with their crimes. It’s about time we put fear into criminals, the fear of death and serious injury, from law abiding people shooting back at them for stepping outside of the law.

You dont have to look at the UK to know gun control is a leftist tool that has no bearing whatsoever on Crime control. Look at Detroit, Chicago, DC and Baltimore. While Baltimore doesnt have an outright gun ban, it is nearly impossible to carry a firearm in the state of MD unless you are a personal butt kisser of some politician in order to get the permit. And why can noone explain rationally why cities that have outright bans have the highest violent crime rates? Things that make you go hhhmmmmmmmmmm.
As a former British cop (for 21yrs) and now a Permanent US resident I feel I have a good perspective on this. Britain used to be a free country with gun laws that were restrictive but acceptable. Therein lies the danger. When I was a cop in the 70s and 80s the law required applicants for a firearms licence to obtain it from the police in his or her area. The police carried out a background check and stipulated the gun should be kept in secure storage. There was a restriction on the amount of ammo that could be held and amendments (Variations) were needed to change or add to the weapons held. This may seem draconian by US standards but it allowed for honest law abiding citizens to keep and use most types of firearm. The gun laws were gradually tightened first shotguns were subject to increased restriction, then semi auto weapons banned. The handgun ban introduced after the tragic school shooting at Dunblane was a typical political knee jerk reaction to a tragedy. The shooter would not have been able to carry out this crime with his weapons had the local police in Scotland carried out the checks they were required to. The only tangible result to the ban was of course the total destruction of our Olympic shooting team, and of course the huge surge in gun crime. The unrestricted flow of guns from Europe into the country, as a result of the EU open border policy also added to the problem.
In a vain effort to keep the truth from the public. Further bans have followed including replica weapons. deactivated weapons and a new law which give a MINIMUM sentence of 5
Year’s imprisonment to anyone in possession of a firearm. This law led to the arrest and conviction of a former soldier who found a weapon throw over his garden fence and unwisely handed it in to the police.
Great Britain under its present liberal regime is a clear example of what is in store for the USA if the liberals get their way. The arguments they give for gun control are exactly those given in Britain were citizens are arrested if they use any kind of force to defend themselves. God bless America the NRA and the NAGR for standing firm against them your liberty was hard won and is worth protecting
