Six year old suspended for hand gesture
… no not that hand gesture, one much more benign.
A Michigan boy was suspended for making a gun gesture with his hand.
That’s right, hoplophobia and Big Brother Nanny-ism has reached a new low.
Erin Jammer, said her son, Mason, was just playing around when he made the gesture Wednesday, the Grand Rapids Press reported.
“I do think it’s harsh for a six-year-old. He’s six and he just likes to play. Maybe what you could do is take his recess away. He’s only six and he doesn’t understand any of this,” Erin Jammer said.
But officials at Jefferson Elementary School said the behavior made other students uncomfortable, and they suspended Mason for the remainder of the week, the paper reported.
Anti-gun activism is rampant at all level of government. Gun owners must continue to be vigilant, and counter these sort of outrageous actions.

Stupidity has run rampant in all levels of government and government run entities. Children have played cops and robbers, cowboys and indians throughout time and have used the hand in the form of a six-shooter in their make-believe play without receiving any type of mental damage. The claim that other children were traumatized is bullshit in my opinion. They just keep chipping away at our 2nd Amendment rights. It was stated earlier that if they take away our firearms, only criminals will have guns. Then guess what? I’ll become an outlaw. From my cold dead fingers will they take my firearms.
Our country has gone stark raving mad. We have vilified guns, and everything else that is an innate part of our history and culture. I know, lets put women in burka’s, require men to grow beards, sing kum ba ya, allow all illegals to stay in this country, bankrupt our country, including our children, our children’s children. Lets feminize men, ignore biology. Read your history and the constitution folks. Our founders are rolling over in their graves and God is exasperated. How soon we forget why this country was established “DON’T TREAD ON ME”.

This is another reason many of us home educate. Shame on the failing school systems. They need to be dis-banded and taken out of the government’s control. I can imagine that at this point your feeling pretty stupid for suspending a 6 year old kid for making a gesture with his hand. Maybe you can’t remember playing cowboys and Indians when you were a kid, but I can. If people like you were in charge when we were kids, we probably would have never been allowed back in school, let along graduated. I don’t even live your state, but I really hope the parents have taken note of how badly you handled a 6 year old boy with a finger.

I thank all you folks above me with your long social analysis-es, however once a word did so big it has too many letters to spell without a hyphen I get unhappy with it! When I was five or six years old my friend Jack Smith and I played cowboys and Indians a lot! I’m white he was black, our teachers were not so alarmist that they worried about “the race barrier” or are “prolificatinge gun violence” infect their only worry was whether we’d fall when we play cowboy in Indian on the monkey bars! Parents should run the household and be responsible for their children! I once had this it was school board for the right to spank my kids so they wouldn’t do stuff that was likely to cause them serious permanent injury or death! It’s none of their damned business. Also the kid has the right to freedom of expression! It’s a Law. And it is part and parcel of every school charter in the United States!

Here we have a mid-school principal who several years ago initiated a 3-day outdoor skills class for all 6th graders, including all girls and boys. Included in the curriculum is how to behave in nature, hunting ethics, surviving in the outdoors if lost, map reading and compass use, camping skills, AND gun safety, how to handle and respect guns and includes a session at a shooting range firing .22 rifles under very strict supervision. As many as 150 volunteers from agencies, teachers, parents, etc. help to put the sessions on each year. Parental permission is required, but they are allowed to withhold permission or to give limited permission omitting the live fire, or the whole class, but in the first class of 223 6th graders, only 6 parents signed limited permission slips, learning about guns, but not firing. The principal met opposition at first, but prevailed saying that if the gun education would save one gun accidental fatality the whole thing was worth it. Completing the course meets the requirements for a state hunter education certificate, but the principal is quite firm in repeating that the course is not intended to make hunters out of every 6th grader. The main purpose of the gun education is to familiarize them with proper gun handling, care & respect, to dispel ignorance. Since his first session several years ago, hundreds of 6th graders – every one who attends 6th grade at that school – has had the course and a few years ago the other mid school in town adopted the program. The initial school adopted a zero tolerance attitude too – zero tolerance for misbehaving, lack of respect for teachers and other students, etc. One infraction and certain privileges are suspended, but certainly not learning about guns or using them. THAT’s education led by an educated man with good judgment and common sense. He and everyone else would laugh at a kid pointing a finger and saying bang as would be appropriate and life would go on in a well-regulated school with attention to vital purposes of schooling.
Remember that violent movie, Happy Gilmore, where the vanquished golf pro had a habit of pointing a finger, blowing away the imagined smoke from the “muzzle” of his finger? That was the epitome of violence, I guess, and should have been severely censored. But it’s apparently ok to show movies with fools waving guns around in other peoples’ faces, ripping off multiple shots, etc. thoroughly demonstrating grossly unsafe gun handling and minimizing the extreme damage that guns in the hands of fools can cause. Think of all the golf balls that guy shot!

I have owned guns since I was 9 years old. I am now 70+ years old. I once thought teachers and the US school system was fair. I now believe the NEA and the incredibly uneducated people who claim they are teachers are Liberal/Socialist that have no intention of teaching, but indoctrinating our children. Unions and the government are totallay out of control.
I served 6 plus years in the military, and have worked in military related contracts my entire working life. I no longer have any respect for teachers, or any so called educators, in this country.
Guns or appearences of what could be percieved as a gun is not the problem, stupid educators and moronic people who think they are smart are the problem.
I have never met a teacher who did not think they were smarter than me, guess what? I have met more teachers who were terrified they would loose their benifits. They were totally dependent on their unions, not what they have done for themselves.

Someone check this guy to see if he is a male or female. Then do a dna test to preclude any sex change freaks. Then fire him, the teacher, and the school superintendant. Then check the school board for membership in socialist organizations.

I think it’s really time to be truthful about who really was uncomfortable! And more importantly – why? This knee-jerk response makes me crazy. Why Herr Vogal, are you in the school system? At 6, children are barely past babyhood. Why stop at suspension? Why not send him to juvy? Or prison – because the way you’re teaching these youngsters, sets the road for them to end up there. Why don’t you take a good look and consider, ponder, the paths of great coaches like Zig Ziglar, or John Wooden and learn how to deal with children of all ages. It’s no wonder there are private schools and home schooling alternatives widely used with non-thinkers like you at the helm of regular schools. Sign me – disgusted!

This is the text of a letter I just emailed to the principal. “As a forty year educator teaching every level from 4th grade to College, serving as both an administrator and teacher, It is my professional opinion you have grossly over reacted. Especially because you are in a State that has many hunters. Unless you reassess the punishment and reinstate the young man, I hope the hunters in your school’s PTA rise up and dismiss you forthwith. Your leftist attitude and mindset is detrimental to the entire school’s student body. Today, not one of the legally owned guns in America killed anyone! Three- fourths of all gun deaths were men or women with extensive criminal records, and you think punishing a 6 year old will affect them? Come back to earth!”
The following is a letter I sent to Mr. Vogel:
Mr. Vogel, I ask as a Father of 4 children to reconsider your position on this. Is he part of a gang? Does he wear colors? Are his pants down to his knees? Are his parents thugs or Felons? Does he do drugs? Does he steal cars? As principal of this school you are supposed to be the leader in the example of creativity, growth of the child’s spirit of learning, communication director between parent and faculty and above all else have the ability to understand children at their grade level. If you and your staff feel you have been threatened by what you seem to perceive is a 6 year old juvenile delinquent destined to a life of crime, then perhaps you should exercise your Second amendment rights by purchasing a handgun and arm all of your staff. After all, you are outnumbered.
This was such a “teachable moment”, sadly missed by an overzealous, politically correct administration. The harm done to the child was significantly more than what he did. What happened to common sense????
Thank God little Mason didn’t fart…… They may have summarily executed him.
Apparently none of these officials have had a 6 year son or if they did he never got outside the house and wore silk undies.

hahaha… I had a couple of similar incidents happen to me while coaching baseball. The first while our team was on offense, with a couple of runners on base, I was base coaching 3rd base… I yelled out to the players, “two dead out there, two dead, run on anything!” (two dead in baseball slang simply menas there are two outs)
After the game, while taking care of some paperwork, a man (I assume) accosted me and asked me if I thought my remarks were appropriate seeing as how we are playing baseball on school grounds? I had no idea what he was talking about. When he explained to me that my “two dead” comments were inappropriate, I almost had to laugh out loud. What a sissy. I think he was a school teacher or administrator as he had the look and was wearing a trench coat in the middle of summer.
Another such incident involved a tee ball game where the players are 5-6 year olds. It was coach pitch to the opposing team. We pitched underhand as the idea is to let everyone hit so we can have fielding and teach all aspects of the game. One small boy would not swing the bat. Our coach, who was a GREAT guy said, “pull the trigger, go ahead, pull the trigger”. Another baseball term meaning, “swing the bat.” The boys mother was offended. She was a white woman and her son a mullato. I originally thought she was offended because of the opportunity for “trigger” to sound like “nigger.”
Actually was miffed because her son was the only black boy on the field and she erroneously accused are coach of this weird idea that somehow, since he is black, he must be capable of carrying a gun.
She took it all the way to league president. That team boycotted our next game with them.

Schools are allowing psychiatrists to dish out their killer drugs and make billions. Most of the kids DOING the school shootings ARE FOUND TO BE ON THESE PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS, and almost nothing is being done about it! And you are going after a 6 year old kid?
I guess a 6 year old kid is a lot easier to discipline then the multi-billion dollar drug company cartel, protected by the FDA, and fronted by psychiatrists.
When I was a kid we played cops and robbers, and Davy Crockett day in and day out with cap guns and cork rifles. We had NO school shootings, and in my 12 years in school we had only 1 suicide. We watched ‘Have Gun Will Travel’, ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’, and countless shows with guns blazing, and there were no shootings.
You may say times have changed. They sure have!
We now have psychiatrists in the schools, who are in the big drug companies pockets, and instead of teaching kids responsible gun ownership and use, were telling them that GUNS ARE BAD! Guns aren’t bad, only the people who abuse them are bad.
My friends and I never would have dreamed of using a gun to harm someone, as we were taught to respect them and to respect ourselves. Keep telling people that guns are bad, try to take them away from responsible people and leave the criminals armed, and we get a crazy scene like we have today.
GUNS AREN’T THE PROBLEM! The 6 year old is not the problem. You are going after the wrong target.
Just like criminals walk by houses that have good locks, lights, and security systems, they avoid areas where they know responsible people are armed, and know how to defend themselves and others.
Fortunately there are great organizations like “Front Sight”, the “National Association For Gun Rights”, and many others who respect our Constitution and 2nd Amendment.

You can’t fix stupidity. It’s apparantly taught to our educators. While in high school I remember carrying a gun in a rack in my truck rear window and the Principal wanting to see it because he carried one just like it. But I live in WV not Michigan.
Clearly this guy should be fired . when i was six we played cowboys and indians on the playground at school . they are going to punish a child for having a good imagination in a day and age when you never see a child out playing anymore video games are taking the place of what we used to have to make up . not that i am against video games i am an avid gamer myself . and as far as guns go i was raised in a good old god fearing country home with great meals served every night and where every house on the block had at least three guns . one of which always seemed to be the old jed clampett shotgun hanging over the door . that was our burgler alarm for many years . there is nothing wrong with guns in the right hands . i got my first rifle when i was twelve years old and i have killed anyone yet or committed a crime . its all in how you are raised . If we as people give in to these liberals the only ones who wont have guns are those of us who are registered owners . almost every weapon used in a crime is some saturday night special or some other throw away with no serial numbers gun control cant control something that isnt in the system therefore it doesn’t exist . so we as registered gun owners would have ours taken away . while the criminals get to keep theirs . The only way gun control can ever work is to take every gun in america and melt it down and put hundreds of people on the boarders to make sure no more come in , but then what kinda shape will our country be in once word gets around that the U.S. is no longer armed

I was taught to use firearms at a very early age as many were. What we accomplished in WW II speaks for itself.
We sould have courses on the proper use of firearms not expelling students for playing games.

No doubt by now you’re being buried under an onslaught of emails from gun rights advocates for suspending Mason Jammer, 6, for making a gun gesture at his classmates. In response to an email forwarded to me from the National Association for Gun Rights, I want you to know that this American citizen supports your authority to discipline students.
I also want you to know that I think it’s important that we teach our children about the dangers of handguns. Little Mason’s gesture alone was enough to frighten his classmates. What if he had been holding a real gun? This happened to our son in sixth grade when one of his classmates brought her father’s real handgun to school and threatened several children with it, including our son.
I must say that I think a three-day suspension from school is a bit harsh for a 6-year-old. In my opinion as a parent and former Sunday school teacher, I think it would have been sufficient to have taken him off the playground, had a firm but sensitive talk with him, and given him the rest of the day off with a note to his mother. I hope in future you’ll make a greater effort at more age-appropriate discipline.
Nonetheless, I applaud you for making clear that attitudes and actions endorsing handgun violence will not be tolerated in your school.

They really should be out stopping the bullying that’s right in front of them – we see it on TV all the time. Poor kid, hope this doesn’t ruin his life but hope the teacher and principal regret what they did!
Growing up on a farm, guns are an esecial tool for us. We were taught the importance along with the saftey measures of “the tool”. Our father taught us gun safety from a very early age. If this is such a “problem” maybe gun safety should be taught in the schools as an optional course. But such a thing as a gesture, instead of expelling him, have him go to a safety course so he may understand better what the impact of “improper use of a gun” is all about.
I am appalled at this. The official has never been a child I assume. I can only hope the mother pulls this child out of that school where he will be learning nothing anyway, and home teaches or another school or private. This can only tramanize this child. The school officals should be ashamed.

defend their child and all other children from this type of destructive attack.
This attack by the hired representative of one of our public institutions of learning on a six-year old child is more psychologically
damaging to the child, than a fingerpointing should be to a normal adult.
This adult has exhibited extremely poor judgment and must not be allowed to continue to affect the lives or experiences of
children in any manner. At a minimum, please request that the School Board release this person from all education-related
positions immediately for causing psychological damage to a child and interrupting the child’s public education.
Please let us know how you will assist American children being attacked in this manner by any official.

I can’t believe such a punishment for this gesture. Years ago, we played cowboys and indians. This gesture was used for the cowboys and playing like you are shooting off an arrow was the indians. Later it became cops and robbers. No arrows just the gesture. No one was frightened by it because it was part of our countrys heritage and happening. Did you ever see the bad guy come out on top then? It was innocent play by children. It is the adults that make it what it is not, a game. Put God back in the schools and let him do his work and the parents do theirs.
