Guns sales expected to slow

Business publication Barron’s is using market trends to predict that the meteoric rise in gun sales will begin to fall.

Shares of the nation’s major firearms makers fell Monday on analyst concerns that the postelection surge in hand gun sales may be coming to an end.

Both Sturm Ruger & Co. Inc. and Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. declined following an article in the business publication Barron’s, which suggested that the companies could see slowing consumer demand for their firearms.

The news dragged stocks lower, but it wasn’t completely unexpected, said Cai von Rumohr, an analyst with Cowen and Co.

“This has been the concern ever since the gun sales started to pick up,” he said in an interview.

Sales began to rise following the November election of President Barack Obama on fears that a Democratic candidate would impose stricter gun control laws.

Shares of Smith & Wesson, based in Springfield, Mass., fell 27 cents, or 4.48 percent, to $5.76 in afternoon trading.

Southport, Conn.-based Sturm Ruger shares traded down $1.10 cents, or 8.63 percent, to $11.64.

Ancedotal evidence here in my home in Colorado, points to the truth of this report.  Gun stores that were stripped bare of all but the most expensive hunting rifles and trap shotguns, are finally restocked with Glocks, Sigs and AR variants of various makes and models.

  • I served in the Army during the Viet Nam conflict, My father served in the Army during the 2nd world war, my Grandfather served in the Army during the 1st world war, and I have a family lineage coming to the USA from England going back to 1640. Without going into all the specifics, I have numerous family members who have defended our freedom as US citizens. Here is the the unpopular part of my input. Trusting souls that we Americans are, we laid down, and allowed the government to impose things like MC Helmet laws, Seatbelt laws, No Smoking laws, etc. Whether you support Hemet laws, Seatbelt laws, or because you don’t smoke, No smoking laws, the fact is these were only the prelude to what we can expect in the future. We allowed our rights to be manipulated based on personal choice, and for that reason the government has identified our achilles’ heal. Not all Americans ride Motorcycles, smoke, or believe in freedom of choice in whether or not to use a seatbelt. Whether you’re a Consevative, or Liberal it is not a question of your personal opinion about the subject, it’s the negative impact on our freedom. Folks, we can’t have it both ways. By the way I have a Michigan concealed pistol licence; You should too…
