3/10/2008 - State Legislators join Mayor Bloomberg's anti-gun campaign

Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) -- an anti-gun front group -- has spawned another freedom hating coalition: State Legislators Against Illegal Guns. The coalition of state legislators who want to willfully ignore the U.S. Constitution was debuted at MAIG's annual conference in Florida.

Six state legislators from around the country today announced a new coalition of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns while attending a regional conference of the companion group Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

At the conference, hosted by Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton, the six founding members of the new group pledged to enlist their colleagues in state legislatures across the country in an effort to identify common sense policies that will help to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. The lawmakers represent suburban, rural and urban districts from around the country, united by a commitment to public safety that extends beyond political and regional boundaries.

The state legislators were joined by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and mayors and law enforcement officials from more than 20 Florida cities. The founding members of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns are New York State Senator Eric Schneiderman (D); Florida State Representative Evan Jenne (D); Kansas State Representative Thomas C. "Tim" Owens (R); Nebraska State Senator Brad Ashford (R); Pennsylvania State Representative Cherelle L. Parker (D) and Illinois Representative Elizabeth Coulson (R).

3/6/2008 - Business owner stops robbery, shoots intruder in the rear

The owner of a truck stop was working late in his office when he stumbled upon a burglar complete with ski-mask and crowbar. The business owner exercised his right to defend himself and his place of business by shooting the intruder in the rear.

A Sioux Falls man accused of trying to burglarize Larry’s I-29 Truck Plaza near Tea was shot in the buttocks by the business owner early Wednesday morning.

According to Lincoln County Sheriff Dennis Johnson, the plaza’s owner was working in a back office at about 1:15 a.m. when he heard a noise coming from somewhere in the building.

Carrying a loaded handgun, the owner went to investigate and when he opened the door to his office, another door beside it opened and “he finds himself face to face with the intruder wearing a mask and holding a prybar,” Johnson said.

The owner fired one round at the intruder, later identified by authorities as Austin L. Yesda, 22, of Sioux Falls. The bullet hit Yesda in his backside and he fled the building.

3/5/2008 - OH CCW permit holder defends self, stops car jacking

Refusing to be a victim, a 21 year old Ohio concealed weapons permit holder shot three criminals attempting to carjack his car.

A 21-year-old central Toledo man was fatally shot Sunday night by the victim of an apparent robbery attempt, police said.

Police said Victor Wiggins, of 2433 Glenwood Ave., died at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center about 30 minutes after being shot.

The shooting occurred about 9:35 p.m. in the 1000 block of Norwood Avenue near Waite Avenue, police said.

Rahmaad Jones , 21, was sitting in an older model, custom-painted orange car on Norwood when three males approached on foot and pointed a gun at him, police said. Mr. Jones, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, had a 40-caliber pistol tucked in his waistband

3/4/3008 - Obama wants no gun stores within 5 miles of schools; porn shops ok

As a state senator, Presidential hopeful Barack Obama supported legislation that would ban federal firearms licensees from operating with in five miles of a school. Additionally, Obama supported a measure to allow porn stores to operate nearly schools.

Sweeping federal gun control legislation proposed by Sen. Barack Obama (D-13th) would increase the penalties on gun runners who are flooding Chicago's streets with illegal weapons.

At an anti-gun rally held at the Park Manor Christian Church, 600 E. 73rd St., headed by the Rev. James Demus, Obama also said he's backing a resolution being introduced into the City Council by Alds. Toni Preckwinkle (4th), Ted Thomas (15th), Leslie Hairston (5th) to call for a "shot-free" millennium celebration.

Obama outlined his anti-gun plan that includes increased penalties for the interstate transportation of firearms. The maximum penalty now for bringing a gun across the border is 10 years in prison. Obama is proposing to make it a felony for a gun owner whose firearm was stolen from his residence which causes harm to another person if that weapon was not securely stored in that home.

He's proposing restricting gun purchases to one weapon a month and banning the sale of firearms at gun shows except for "antique" weapons. Obama is also proposing increasing the licensing fee to obtain a federal firearms license.

3/2/2008 - In the wake of tragedy student group fights for right to self-defense

Students are coming together to join a group set on establishing a "right-to-carry" on university campuses across the country. Students for Concealed Carry on Campus recognize that the right to self-defense is a God-given and constitutionally protected right. Along with books, laptop and cell phone, there is something else that Jeremy Clark thinks is essential to bring to class: his gun.

The Villanova University law student said the sickening spate of campus shootings, from Virginia Tech to Northern Illinois University, left him feeling vulnerable without his Glock 9mm semiautomatic handgun.

"If I'm in a classroom where a shooting is taking place, I'd like a chance to be able to defend myself," said the 29-year-old Army veteran from Bethlehem, Pa., who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But Villanova, like nearly all colleges and universities nationwide, bans firearms on campus. A new group, called Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC), would like to change that, arguing that concealed-carry permit holders should be able to bring weapons to school to defend themselves and their classmates against a deranged killer.

2/27/2008 - Hawaii liberals use tragedy to try to ban .50 BMG cal rifles.

Hoplophobes in Hawaii's police force and media are using the recent tragedy at an Illinois university to call for the ban of .50 caliber rifles. Obviously the liberal hysteria over these so-called "made-for-war" rifles has nothing to do with the tragic loss of innocent life at Northern Illinois University. The very idea that the Honolulu Police would be lobbying for an unconstitutional infringement of our rights, further proves that law enforcement is not is not interested in protecting our rights.

As students returned to campus at Northern Illinois University yesterday following the deadly shooting rampage of Feb. 14, a bill that would ban civilian possession of a made-for-war sniper rifle lies dormant in the Hawaii Legislature. Lawmakers should enact the bill to prevent a shooting incident of potentially huge proportions.

NIU graduate student Steve Kazmieczak's killing of five students and wounding of 16 before turning the gun on himself brought horrific recollections of the killing of 33 students and faculty at Virginia Tech less than a year ago. Campus officials across the country are looking again at measures aimed at preventing similar disasters.

Police Chief Boisse Correa is asking the Legislature to ban possession of .50-caliber sniper rifles in the islands. Those 28-pound rifles -- the most common manufactured by Barrett Co. -- were described in a 1999 congressional Government Accountability Office as "among the most destructive and powerful firearms sold legally in the United States." They are banned only in California.

2/26/2008 - Park Rangers oppose right to self defense

National Park Rangers -- government employees -- have joined with liberal environmental groups to oppose the constitutional right of citizens to keep and bear arms. Anti-gun activists with in the National Parks system don't believe that our constitutional rights matter in "their" parks.

Park rangers, retirees and conservation groups are protesting a plan by the Interior Department to reconsider regulations restricting loaded guns in national parks.

The groups say current regulations requiring that visitors to national parks render their weapons inaccessible were working and have made national parks among the safest places in America.

"Loaded guns are not needed and are not appropriate in our national parks," said Doug Morris, a retired park superintendent and member of the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees.

The plan to reconsider the gun regulations "could break what is not broken and change the nature of our national parks," Morris said Monday.

Morris spoke at a news conference called in response to an announcement Friday that the Interior Department will review gun laws on lands administered by the National Park Service and the Fish and Wildlife Service. The department will draw up new rules by April 30 for public comment, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said in a letter to 50 senators who requested the review.

2/22/2008 - Nebraska Liberals try to ban all non-hunting guns

Nebraska's liberal state legislature is attempting to ban all guns deemed "inherently dangerous." Legislative Bill 958 would create an unelected and unaccountable commishion to determine while rifles are "dangerous" and should be banned.

A heavily rewritten gun-control bill takes aim at assault weapons and, if approved by the Legislature, could lead to the banning of certain firearms in Nebraska.

As amended by the Judiciary Committee, Legislative Bill 958 would create a seven-member law enforcement commission to develop a list of guns deemed "inherently dangerous."

The Legislature would vote on whether to ban the weapons for sale or resale in Nebraska. The commission would be required to update the list every two years.

The committee sent the amended bill to the full Legislature on a 6-0 vote Wednesday.

All of the bill's original provisions were stripped out. Those provisions required that all guns be sold with a gun lock or trigger lock, that the loss or theft of a gun be reported to authorities within 48 hours and that people convicted of gun felonies go to prison for at least five years.

State Sen. Brad Ashford, sponsor of the bill and amendment, said he decided this week that the original provisions would do little to prevent another incident like the Von Maur shootings at Omaha's Westroads Mall.

After briefly considering requiring permits to purchase any firearm, whether handgun or long gun, he decided to focus on what he called "military-style" weapons.

"The assault weapons are the problem," he said. "There are some guns that are so inherently dangerous — they have no purpose for hunting. Those are the weapons we need to consider taking off the street."

2/20/2008 - Montana Legislators take a stand for gun rights

Members of the Montana state legislature have come out in support of the individual right to keep and bear arms.  In a resolution they argue that anything other than an individual-right interpretation of the Second Amendment in the D.C. Gun Ban case would violate the compact between Montana and the U.S. government.

WHEREAS, when the Court determines in Heller whether or not the Second Amendment secures an individual right, the Court will establish precedent that will affect the State of Montana and the political rights of the citizens of Montana;

WHEREAS, when Montana entered into statehood in 1889, that entrance was accomplished by a contract between Montana and the several states, a contract known as The Compact With The United States (Compact), found today as Article I of the Montana Constitution;

WHEREAS, with authority from Congress acting as agent for the several states, President Benjamin Harrison approved the Montana Constitution in 1889, which secured the right of "any person" to bear arms, clearly intended as an individual right and an individual right deemed consistent then with the Second Amendment by the parties to the contract; ...

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the undersigned members of the 60th Montana Legislature as follows:

1. That any form of "collective rights" holding by the Court in Heller will offend the Compact; and.........4. Montana reserves all usual rights and remedies under historic contract law if its Compact should be violated by any "collective rights" holding in Heller.

2/19/2008 - Idaho University President opposes student's right to self defense

Tim White, President of the University of Idaho, yesterday came out in public opposition to student's right to defend themselves. White, embracing typical liberal taking points, claims that student's right to defend themselves is "unacceptable." White's outrageous and unconstitutional claims also debunk the myth that all westerners support gun rights.

Legislators are holding up a proposed gun bill, and that's just fine with the University of Idaho administration.

A provision in the bill would have forbid local governments and college administrators from banning guns on Idaho college campuses. UI President Tim White said Friday if the bill had passed as written, they'd have a potentially dangerous situation on their hands.

"It would have allowed concealed weapons, loaded weapons, on the University of Idaho campus, and all the campuses in the state of Idaho," said White. "We just found that to be unacceptable."

Senate Bill 1381 was officially pulled for revision. Language in the bill was cause for concern. White said the shift of authority was an unintended consequence of the bill, as introduced by Senator Curt McKenzie of Boise.

2/18/2007 - Barack Obama claims gun rights are individual, but backs D.C. Gun Ban

Presidential hopeful, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) has been trying to hide his anti-gun positions. As recently as Saturday Obama claimed that he believed the Second Amendment was an individual right. However Obama showed his true, anti-gun colors by supporting the District of Columbia's unconstitutional gun ban.

Barack Obama said Friday that the country must do "whatever it takes" to eradicate gun violence following a campus shooting in his home state, but he believes in an individual's right to bear arms.

Obama said he spoke to Northern Illinois University's president Friday morning by phone and offered whatever help his Senate office could provide in the investigation and improving campus security. The Democratic presidential candidate spoke about the Illinois shooting to reporters while campaigning in neighboring Wisconsin.

The senator, a former constitutional law instructor, said some scholars argue the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees gun ownerships only to militias, but he believes it grants individual gun rights.

"I think there is an individual right to bear arms, but it's subject to commonsense regulation" like background checks, he said during a news conference...

Although Obama supports gun control, while campaigning in gun-friendly Idaho earlier this month, he said he does not intend to take away people's guns.

At his news conference, he voiced support for the District of Columbia's ban on handguns, which is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court next month.

2/14/2008 - Heller case lawyer criticizes anti-gun Justice Department

Robert Levy, one of the pro-gun attorneys in the Heller v. D.C. Supreme Court Case, has rightly lashed out at the Bush Administration's Justice Department. The Bush Justice Department filed a legal brief in the Heller case, which called the private ownership of firearms a "public safety threat." The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Heller v. D.C. Case on March 18, 2008.

If you think the District of Columbia's ban on all functional firearms in all homes is a reasonable regulation under the Second Amendment, you'll love the friend-of-the-court brief filed by the Bush administration in D.C. v. Heller, now before the Supreme Court.

The Department of Justice's (DOJ) previously stated position is that the Second Amendment secures a right of individuals not restricted to militia service. But astonishingly, the Justice Department now recommends an elastic standard for determining whether a handgun ban is reasonable. According to the DOJ, the courts should consider the nature and functional adequacy of available alternatives. That may sound sensible at first blush, but it could be fatal to the Heller litigation.

Here's the rub: The Justice Department says the Court of Appeals ruling that overturned the D.C. ban might cast doubt on the constitutionality of existing federal legislation, including machine-gun regulations. So the administration urged that Heller be returned to the lower courts for appropriate fact-finding to determine whether rifles and shotguns in the home, as permitted by the D.C. Code, are an adequate substitute for handguns.

That came as quite a shock to those of us who believed the administration's professed fealty to gunowners' rights. What we got instead was a recommendation that could be the death knell for the only Second Amendment case to reach the Supreme Court in nearly 70 years.

Rather than a foursquare pronouncement that the D.C. handgun ban is unreasonable by any standard, the Justice Department has essentially endorsed years of depositions and expert testimony, and a rerun before a less hospitable Supreme Court.

In effect, a conservative administration has thrown a lifeline to gun controllers. Following the DOJ blueprint, they can pay lip service to an individual right while simultaneously stripping it of any real meaning. After all, if the D.C. ban can survive judicial scrutiny, it is difficult to imagine a regulation that would not.

2/12/2008 - Brits destroy gun industry; military runs out of machine guns

The British Government has done everything in it's power to destroy firearms manufacturers in the United Kingdom. It's no surprise that their liberal, Chicken Little approach to firearms has resulted in a very real -- and unintended -- consequence: the British military has run out of small arms.

The Army has run out of machine guns, The Sun can reveal. The crisis is unlikely to be solved before June, a leaked report reveals.

British troops “desperately” need 400 of the jumbo 0.5in calibre heavy machine guns – the weapon most acutely missed. The Army has also run out of the 7.62mm GPMG and Minimis. Supply has collapsed partly because of a dispute with the manufacturers, Manroy – which also provides weapons to Saudi Arabia.

The leaked report – prepared for the Army’s command centre in Wilton, Wilts – reveals that generals have urged the Ministry of Defence “to prevent Manroy delivering Saudi weapons ahead of our requirement”.

Generals asked the US to help but were snubbed by the Pentagon – who have dubbed British colleagues “The Borrowers”.

The report says: “We are trying to get 400 guns transferred from the US. However, the material was provided by US DoD and they are not prepared to release them. MoD-level engagement is needed to try and get these released.”

The crisis is having a crippling effect on training in the UK – with all available spares being rushed to war zones.

Almost HALF the Minimi Light Machine Guns used at Catterick and Brecon are also out of commission.

The report adds: “The original spares package was inadequate and usage has been far above that expected. As a result stocks are very fragile.”

Tory MP and ex-Army officer Patrick Mercer said last night: “Thank God the Army have still got their bayonets – it looks like they may be all they’ll have left. This could have been dealt with months ago."

2/11/2008 - VP Cheney stands for D.C. Gun Rights, and against Bush Administration

Vice-President Dick Cheney has joined members of Congress in support of D.C. gun rights, by signing on to a pro-gun rights amicus brief. Cheney's support for the gun rights of D.C. residents stands in stark contrast to the views of President George W. Bush and the Justice Department. Bush's Justice Department has filed their own amicus brief in the D.C. gun ban case claiming that gun ownership is a "threat to public safety."

Vice President Dick Cheney took the unusual step Friday of joining with lawmakers in signing a Supreme Court brief that goes further in support of gun rights than the one submitted by the Bush administration.

The filings were made in a case that challenges the District of Columbia's ban on handguns. It was scheduled to be argued on March 18.

Both briefs argue that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to own guns. However, the administration contends that too categorical a ruling could threaten other federal gun restrictions and wants the justices to send the case back to lower courts without deciding whether the handgun ban should fall.

Cheney joined more than 300 senators and representatives, led by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, who want the court to rule that Washington's ban is unconstitutional.

"The vice president believes strongly in Second Amendment rights," Cheney spokeswoman Megan Mitchell said.

Seventeen Democratic lawmakers and District of Columbia Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton urged the court to uphold the ban.

2/8/2008 - Senators and Congressmen join opposition to D.C. Gun Ban

A majority of our elected representatives in Washington have signed an amicus brief stating their support for the gun rights of D.C. residents. 55 Senators and over 250 members of Congress have signed on to the brief, including Presidential Candidate Senator John McCain (R - AZ). In the face of overwhelming opposition, the Justice Department has filed a legal brief expressing the Bush Administration's belief that gun ownership is a "threat to public safety.

A majority of the Senate and more than half of the members of the House will file a brief today urging the Supreme Court to uphold a ruling that the District's handgun ban violates the Second Amendment.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.), who led the effort to file the friend-of-the-court brief, said her staff could not find another instance in which such a large portion of Congress had taken a position on an issue before the court.

"This court should give due deference to the repeated findings over different historical epochs by Congress, a co-equal branch of government, that the amendment guarantees the personal right to possess firearms," their brief contends.

"The District's prohibitions on mere possession by law-abiding persons of handguns in the home and having usable firearms there are unreasonable."

2/7/2008 - CCW Permit holder drops goblin

A Houston man once again proved that CCW permits provide protection for the average citizen. A criminal tried to car jack a man's car in a grocery store parking lot. The car owner fought back and killed the assailant.

A robbery victim turned the tables on his attacker in a grocery store parking lot late Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said a gunman approached a man as he got out of his vehicle at the HEB store at Gulfgate on the South Loop East near the Gulf Freeway at about 10 p.m.

The gunman demanded money from the man, police said. The man decided to fight back. "The complainant was able to draw his own weapon and shot and killed the suspect," Sgt. Robert Odom said.

The gunman died at the scene. Detectives said he may have had an accomplice.

"The suspect attempted to get into a car but fell out the door," Odom said. "He didn't get all the way in, so we don't know if this guy was involved or if it was a situation where the suspect just tried to jump in his car."

2/6/2008 - Minnesota Court violates constitution, bans self defense in church

A Minnesota appeals court ruled against the right of self-defense for church goers by banning the carrying of concealed firearms in churches. Additionally, churches are not required to post signs regarding the prohibition of firearms in churches. If such an unconstitutional ruling had been in place in Colorado a few weeks ago, many more would have died in the attack upon New Life Church in Colorado Springs. Jeanne Assam, a Colorado concealed weapons permit holder and member of New Life Church, shot and killed a crazed attacker as he shot fleeing church members.

The Minnesota Court of Appeals says churches can ban guns from their property, and they don't have to follow a state law specifying how to post signs that say guns are prohibited. The Appeals Court also says churches can ban guns in their parking lots, day-care centers and other charitable, educational and nonprofit facilities owned by churches.

2/4/2008 - 9 Montana legislators have CCW permits

Montana legislators, Democrat and Republican a like, know carrying a firearm improves their personal safety.

State Rep. Ed Butcher has been packing heat for 30 years. “I carry at all times,” the Winifred Republican said in a recent interview.

Today, Butcher carries a .38 caliber pistol, but back in 1979 it was a .22 handgun that saved his life. A man was coming at him, intending to kill him, Butcher believes.

“He didn't think I carried a gun,” he said. Butcher pulled out his .22 pistol and held it to the man's forehead. You've never seen eyes get so big so fast, Butcher said. The man backed down.

“It's one of those things where I'd probably be dead in that situation if I hadn't had it,” said Butcher. “It saved my life once and I'm a firm believer in it.”

Butcher has never again drawn his concealed pistol. He is one of nine state lawmakers with a concealed weapons permit, a Lee Newspapers investigation showed, and the only one to ever brandish the firearm.

1/29/2008 - D.C. Police continue to confiscate firearms

The anti-gun D.C. Police department is at it again. Over the weekend D.C. police sized firearms from a private home. As of today, not charges or arrests have been made.

From the AP: D.C. police seized 26 guns in a weekend raid on a house in northwest Washington.

Ten rifles, four shotguns, four handguns, five pellet guns and three starter pistols were recovered during Sunday's raid at the home on 13th Street. Several silencers, ammunition and body-armor vests also were seized.

Mayor Adrian Fenty and Police Chief Cathy Lanier announced the results of the raid at a news conference Monday, but provided few details about potential targets of the investigation.

No one was home during the raid, and no one has been arrested.

1/28/2007 - Maryland Mayor wants serial numbers for ammo

Anti-gun elements are at it again in Maryland. Instead of addressing the real problems associated with violent crime, Annapolis Mayor Ellen Moyer wants to put the ammunition industry out of business and treat all gun owners as if they were guilty until proven innocent.

In the wake of a double homicide in Annapolis' Bay Ridge Gardens apartments, Mayor Ellen Moyer is pushing for lawmakers to draft legislation that requires gun manufacturers to produce microstamp imprints of a gun's serial number on shell casings.

The Annapolis mayor plans to meet with state leaders today, including House Speaker Michael Busch, D-Annapolis, City Police Chief Joseph Johnson and representatives from several state agencies to push for legislation and secure crime and drug-prevention funding.
