Louisiana House Passes Constitutional Carry Bill, Next Stop Gov. Landry’s Desk for Signature

Feb 28, 2024

Baton Rouge, LA – The Louisiana House passed Constitutional Carry today on a 75-28 vote. The bill SB 1, sponsored by Sen. Blake Miguez, is now headed to the governor’s desk for signature.

“This is a great day for the people of Louisiana,” said Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights. “We want to thank the 80,000 members and supporters of the National Association for Gun Rights who signed petitions to urge passage of a clean bill. Without them, there could have been a much different outcome.”

On February 20th, the National Association for Gun Rights delivered 80,000 petitions on day one of the special session urging passage of the bill.

Constitutional Carry legislation, sponsored by pro-gun Representative Danny McCormick, has passed the legislature in previous years but failed to get past then-Governor John Bel Edwards desk. Newly elected Governor Jeff Landry was endorsed by the National Association for Gun Rights PAC last year due to his enthusiastic support for Constitutional Carry as well as his 100% pledged support for the Second Amendment.

Constitutional Carry is the simple concept that law-abiding gun owners who can legally possess a firearm can legally carry the firearm, open or concealed, without a government permit.

27 states have some form of Constitutional Carry in statute, with South Carolina on the cusp of joining the list. Louisiana would be the 28th state to enact such legislation if SB 1 becomes law.

The National Association for Gun Rights is the nation’s second largest pro-gun organization, with 4.5 million members and supporters nationwide.
