NAGR Warns Against Gun Control Measures in New Mexico Special Session

Jul 18, 2024

Santa Fe, NM –The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) is once again issuing a strong warning against any efforts by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham or anti-gun legislators to infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of New Mexicans during the current special session.

“With her call for today’s special session, Grisham swung open the gates for any anti-gun measures to be introduced,” warned Dustin Curtis, Director of State Affairs for the National Association for Gun Rights.

During this special session, NAGR staff is in Santa Fe to deliver more than 56,000 petitions and lobby legislators against any plans by Governor Grisham or her allies to pass gun control legislation.

“Our constitutional rights are not up for negotiation,” proclaimed Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights. “Any attempt to restrict the rights of law-abiding gun owners in New Mexico will be met with resistance from our organization and our supporters.”

Previously, the New Mexico Federal District Court issued a Temporary Restraining Order against Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Secretary of Health Patrick Allen’s Executive Order 2023-130 and a subsequent Public Health Emergency Order issued by the Secretary last fall in a lawsuit brought by NAGR and Foster Haines, a NAGR member in New Mexico.

NAGR argued the governor’s public health gun ban was unconstitutional on the merits of the Supreme Court’s ruling NYSRPA v. Bruen, which held New York’s ban on the public carry of firearms unconstitutional. Bruen also held that any gun regulation that does not fall into the text, history, and tradition of the Second Amendment is unconstitutional.

Governor Grisham amended her Executive Order a few days later in response.

“Whether it’s in the courtroom or at that capitol, we will continue to mobilize against Governor Grisham and the gun grabber’s anti-gun agenda,” added Brown.

The National Association for Gun Rights is the nation’s largest “no compromise” pro-gun organization, with 4.5 million members nationwide.
