Federal Affairs Coordinator

The Federal Affairs Coordinator will assist the Director of Political Affairs in the Washington, DC office with a focus on Congressional activity. This circulates on relationships and contacts that are built on the Hill. Although the main focus will be what is happening in Congress, priorities and focus may also include all other federal affairs, as well as some state issues as assigned. The job entails the following:

Hill Action:

  • Monitor and track all federal legislation pertinent to the Second Amendment.
  • Understand and report details of legislation that are pertinent to the cause.
  • Establish relationships with staff and members as a representative for NAGR.
  • Communicate with Congressional offices positions on legislation, and notify of new legislation when necessary.
  • Assist the Political Director with operations of the DC office.
  • Maintain close relationships with top-allied offices and choice staff that provide the most effective information and material.
  • Evaluate issues and projects using tools like Red Fox Four and Five Column Analysis.
  • Maintain legislative research and 5-columns to be able to predict and act on upcoming legislative battles.
  • Assist the Political Director in scheduling and research.

Media:

  • Lead in identifying and taking advantage of news and situations that merit NAGR comment.
  • Draft correspondence and comment from the organization on a regular basis.
  • Assist the political team in any social media projects when necessary.

Reporting:

  • Each week while in session (or when meetings take place) a weekly Hill Report will be written and distributed to pertinent internal parties.
  • Report any important information as soon as possible by phone or email.
  • Keep notes for after action reports to evaluate legislative battles and other federal programs.
  • Track and include in Hill Report the weekly Congressional record.

State of work:

When Congress is not in session or there is little going on, it may be necessary to switch focus on to state operations and projects. This may include:

  • Assist in legislative and election projects, including legislative project planning and execution
  • Evaluate issues and projects using tools like Red Fox Four and Five Column Analysis.
  • Travel and speak with bill sponsors or testify for or against legislation.

Representative:

  • Travel and act as representative for NAGR when necessary.
  • Meet with and evaluate prospective candidates for federal office.

Miscellaneous:

When Congress is not in session or there is limited work to be done, helping in other work in the department will be necessary. This will included:

  • Copy writing, copy proofing, coding and deploying emails.
  • Conduct any research necessary for federal affairs: legislation, legislative procedure, elections, members, candidates, etc.
  • Tour duties, representing NAGR to our high dollar donors.

Proficiencies and Requirements:

  • Firm understanding of the legislative process, firearms terminology and gun rights issues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and ability to quickly learn new software platforms unique to the job.
  • Strong communications skills both written and oral, attention to detail, professional demeanor in person and on social media, ability to make deadlines.
  • A self-starter with long-term vision for the organization and the position is essential.
  • Able to identify and track all ongoing projects and action items in writing and coordinate assignments with others.

Preferred Qualifications (optional):

  • High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite Software.
  • Experience managing mail projects, vendors.
  • Basic proficiency in HTML.
  • Advanced understanding of FACL teachings not directly applicable to the position.

Pay Range (Non-Exempt): $55,000
