House Judiciary Committee Approves First “Assault Weapons” Ban in Decades

Jul 25, 2022

On July 20th, the House Judiciary Committee voted to advance, H.R. 1808, the “Assault Weapons Ban of 2021,” by a party-line vote of 25-18.

The meeting lasted throughout most of the day, where both pro-gun and anti-gun proponents argued back and forth about the constitutionality of such a bill.

The bill would make it a crime to “import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic firearm or large capacity ammunition feeding device,” which includes most handguns.

Most of the firearms that fall into this category would be banned solely on cosmetic features they possess, like a pistol grip, telescoping or adjustable stock, and the ability to accept a “high-capacity” magazine.

A date to be voted on in the full House is yet to be set.
